PM Surya Ghar subsidy checker
Answer five questions about your connection, roof, state and planned system size to see whether you are likely to qualify for the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana central subsidy, and roughly how much it would be. The final decision rests with the national portal and your DISCOM.
How it works
- Tell us the type of electricity connection. The scheme covers residential connections and housing-society common facilities.
- Confirm you own the roof or have the owner’s or society’s authorisation to use it.
- Choose your state and planned size to calculate the central subsidy and any state top-up.
- If a rooftop subsidy was claimed before, only the balance capacity up to 3 kW in total is counted.
- Apply on the national portal (https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in); the DISCOM inspects the installation and the subsidy is credited after commissioning.
Assumptions
- PM Surya Ghar central subsidy for homes: ₹30,000/kW for the first 2 kW plus ₹18,000 for the third kW, capped at ₹78,000.
- Housing societies (GHS/RWA, common facilities): ₹18,000/kW, limited to 3 kW per house and 500 kW in total.
- State top-up of ₹30,000 for homes in Assam, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi (UVR state + central rate list). Gujarat and other states: ₹0 extra.
- Earlier subsidy: additional central support only for the balance capacity up to 3 kW overall (MNRE scheme guidelines).
- Central subsidy requires DCR modules (Indian-made modules with Indian-made cells), per the MNRE PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana guidelines — verify at https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
- This checker gives an indicative result only. Final eligibility and amounts are decided by the PM Surya Ghar national portal and your DISCOM.
Frequently asked questions
Who is eligible for PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
The scheme supports grid-connected rooftop solar on residential electricity connections, installed on a roof, terrace, balcony or elevated structure. The household needs a valid electricity connection and a suitable roof it owns or is authorised to use, and must not already have claimed rooftop solar subsidy for that capacity. Housing societies qualify for common-facility connections.
How much subsidy does a 3 kW system get?
A 3 kW home system gets ₹78,000 central financial assistance: ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW plus ₹18,000 for the third kW. Larger home systems are still capped at ₹78,000. In Assam, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, UVR’s rate list adds a ₹30,000 state top-up; Gujarat has no extra state amount.
Do I need DCR solar panels to get the subsidy?
Yes. The MNRE scheme guidelines require modules made in India using Indian-made cells, known as Domestic Content Requirement or DCR modules. Using non-DCR modules anywhere in the installation makes it ineligible for the central subsidy. Households that choose to forgo the subsidy are free to use non-DCR modules instead.
I already received a rooftop subsidy. Can I get more?
Only for the balance up to 3 kW in total. If you installed 1 kW with subsidy earlier and now expand to 4 kW, you can claim central support only for the additional 2 kW, which is ₹48,000. A home that already reached 3 kW with subsidy gets no further central amount, and relocated systems are not eligible again.
How is the subsidy paid?
You apply on the national portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in, choose a vendor, and the DISCOM inspects the system and installs the net meter after installation. The central subsidy is then released to your bank account. UVR prepares the portal and DISCOM paperwork for eligible homes, but approval and payment are handled by the scheme, not by UVR.
